Build Muscle AND Mobility After 40: The Missing Link to Longevity | Coach Dean Pohlman

Brother, what if the reason you’re struggling to build muscle, stay consistent, or train without nagging aches and pains isn’t that you’re getting older… but that you’re missing a critical piece of your fitness?

Strength without mobility can limit you. Mobility without progressive resistance training leaves another important part of your fitness underdeveloped. What if you trained both?

In this special crossover episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast and The Better Man Podcast, I join forces with Coach Dean Pohlman, founder of Man Flow Yoga, to reveal why combining strength training with yoga-based mobility could be one of the smartest approaches to fitness for men in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond.

Dean has spent years helping men improve their flexibility, core strength, movement, and physical confidence. I’ve dedicated my career to helping men over 40 build muscle, burn fat, and transform their bodies through metabolic resistance training.

Now we’ve combined our expertise to create MAN FLOW MUSCLE, a follow-along program that brings both training methods together.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why men who lift weights often neglect the mobility work they need.
  • How strength, flexibility, balance, and core stability work together.
  • Why conventional yoga classes can feel intimidating or unsuitable for many men.
  • The difference between passive stretching and active mobility.
  • How to combine weightlifting and yoga without overwhelming your recovery.
  • Why I use 24-minute total-body metabolic resistance workouts.
  • How Dean designs mobility sessions to complement specific strength workouts.
  • Why your first few weeks should focus on technique, confidence, and consistency.
  • How Man Flow Muscle combines three strength days, three mobility days, and one recovery day.
  • Why the ultimate goal isn’t just looking better, but moving well and staying active for life.

Build Muscle AND Mobility After 40: Why Men Need Both to Stay Strong for Life

Featuring Funk Roberts and Coach Dean Pohlman | Over 40 Alpha Podcast × The Better Man Podcast

Brother, here’s a question every man over 40 should ask himself:

What good is building muscle if you can’t move the way you want to?

You might be strong enough to lift heavy dumbbells, but can you squat comfortably? Can you get down on the floor and back up? Can you reach overhead without struggling? Can you play with your children or grandchildren without constantly thinking about your knees, shoulders, or back?

These are the things that matter as we get older.

And they’re exactly why I teamed up with Coach Dean Pohlman, founder of Man Flow Yoga, for a special crossover episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast and The Better Man Podcast.

We sat down to discuss one of the biggest missing links in fitness for men over 40: combining muscle-building resistance training with purposeful mobility work.

And we revealed how we’ve brought our two training philosophies together in our new program, Man Flow Muscle.

The Problem With Traditional Training After 40

Many men grew up training for one thing: muscle.

We wanted bigger arms, a bigger chest, stronger legs, and a body that looked great.

But mobility? Flexibility? Recovery?

Those were usually afterthoughts.

I know because I was one of those guys.

As a former professional athlete, I rarely stretched when I was younger. Later, when I transitioned into Muay Thai, I began understanding how important warming up, flexibility, and mobility were to my ability to train consistently.

Today, dealing with my own back challenges has made that lesson even more personal.

The goal isn’t simply to look strong.

It’s to remain capable, independent, and physically confident for as long as possible.

Why Mobility and Strength Belong Together

During our conversation, Dean explains why many men turn to mobility training only after something starts bothering them.

Maybe their back feels stiff after lifting.

Maybe their shoulders limit their overhead press.

Maybe squatting or lunging no longer feels comfortable.

Instead of waiting until movement becomes difficult, why not make mobility part of your regular training?

Dean’s approach focuses on active mobility, body control, functional flexibility, and core strength.

My approach focuses on time-efficient metabolic resistance training that challenges the entire body.

Together, they address two important parts of physical fitness.

Why Yoga Alone Isn’t the Whole Answer

One of my favorite parts of this conversation is when Dean discusses the difference between traditional yoga classes and Man Flow Yoga.

Many men avoid yoga because they feel intimidated, aren’t naturally flexible, or don’t understand how it will help their workouts.

Dean developed Man Flow Yoga to address those barriers.

His routines emphasize technique, muscle engagement, controlled movement, and functional strength.

But here’s the other side of the equation.

If you’re doing mobility work but neglecting progressive resistance training, you could be missing opportunities to build the strength and muscle that support healthy aging.

That’s where our collaboration comes in.

Introducing Man Flow Muscle

Man Flow Muscle combines our two training methods into one structured system.

Here’s how it works.

Three days per week: BUILD

You’ll perform my 24-minute follow-along, total-body dumbbell workouts using metabolic resistance training.

Each session includes six exercises designed to challenge multiple muscle groups in a time-efficient format.

Three days per week: FLOW

You’ll follow Dean’s approximately 30-minute Man Flow Yoga sessions, designed specifically to complement the strength workouts.

These routines emphasize mobility, core stability, flexibility, balance, and movement preparation.

One day per week: RECOVER

Your seventh day gives you time to rest and prepare for the next week.

The program is structured as a four-week training plan, with the flexibility to repeat it and continue progressing.

And the best part?

You don’t have to figure everything out yourself.

Dean and I coach you through the sessions. You press play, follow along, and train at an appropriate level.

Your First Four Weeks: Progress, Not Perfection

Another important topic we discuss is expectations.

Week one may feel awkward.

You might not know which dumbbells to choose. Some yoga positions may feel unfamiliar. You might need to modify exercises.

That’s normal.

The goal is to learn the movements, track your progress, and improve your technique.

By weeks two and three, you’ll have more experience with the exercises and a better understanding of your capabilities.

And by week four, you’ll be able to look back and see where you’ve progressed.

Consistency is what matters.

It’s About More Than Building Muscle

One of the reasons Dean and I connected so strongly is that we share the same mission.

We don’t just want men to look better.

We want men to live better.

That means having the physical ability to enjoy the things that make life meaningful.

Playing with your grandchildren. Traveling. Staying active with your wife. Participating in sports and hobbies. Maintaining your independence.

And having the confidence that comes from knowing you’re investing in your health.

Muscle helps you develop strength. Mobility helps you use that strength across the movements of everyday life.

Both deserve a place in your training.
