If you’re a man over 40 and your waist keeps getting bigger, your energy feels unpredictable, or losing fat seems harder than it used to be, you’ve probably heard someone blame insulin.
Maybe you’ve been told carbs are the problem.
Maybe you’ve been told that every insulin spike instantly shuts down fat burning.
Maybe you’ve been told to eliminate fruit, rice and potatoes, fast longer, or start obsessively tracking your blood sugar.
In Episode 206 of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk Roberts breaks down why insulin itself is not the enemy.
The bigger issue is how effectively your body responds to insulin — what we call insulin sensitivity versus insulin resistance.
And one of the most powerful tools men over 40 have for supporting metabolic health?
Muscle.
Not just muscle for looking good in a T-shirt.
Funk explains why skeletal muscle plays an important role in glucose uptake, fuel storage, movement, strength and long-term independence — and why building what he calls Metabolic Muscle should become a major priority after 40.
In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
- What insulin actually does inside your body
- The difference between insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance
- Why insulin should not automatically be viewed as a “fat-storage hormone”
- Why carbohydrates do not automatically make you fat
- Why skeletal muscle is so important for glucose metabolism
- The connection between abdominal fat, visceral fat and metabolic health
- Why walking after meals can be such a powerful habit
- Why sitting all day can work against your health even if you train
- How Funk structures his Meta Test Boost Balance Plate
- Why protein, quality complex carbs, healthy fats, vegetables and fruits all matter
- Why men over 40 should prioritize resistance training
- Why sleep and chronic stress can affect insulin sensitivity
- The 7 biggest mistakes men make when trying to improve metabolic health
Insulin Resistance After 40: Why Muscle May Be Your Most Powerful Metabolic Weapon
If you’re over 40 and your waistline seems to be growing even though you feel like you’re doing “most things right,” insulin has probably entered the conversation.
Maybe somebody told you that carbohydrates are the enemy.
Maybe you heard that every time insulin rises, fat burning stops.
Maybe somebody convinced you that you need to eliminate potatoes, rice, fruit and breakfast entirely.
There’s a much bigger picture.
Insulin is not the enemy.
Insulin is an essential hormone.
The real question is:
How well is your body responding to insulin?
That is where we start talking about insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance.
And for men over 40, one of the most overlooked tools we have for improving the metabolic environment is something I’ve been preaching for years:
MUSCLE.
I call it Metabolic Muscle.
And no, I’m not talking about becoming a bodybuilder.
I’m talking about building and preserving enough skeletal muscle to help you move, stay strong, remain independent and give your body somewhere useful to put glucose.
What Does Insulin Actually Do?
When you eat carbohydrates, your digestive system breaks many of those carbohydrates down into glucose.
That glucose enters your bloodstream and becomes available as fuel.
Your pancreas detects that rise in glucose and releases insulin.
Insulin then helps signal your tissues to take up or store that glucose.
Your muscles can use glucose for activity and can also store glucose as glycogen.
That matters.
Because when your tissues respond well to insulin, we call that insulin sensitivity.
When those tissues stop responding as effectively, the body may compensate by producing more insulin.
That is part of what we mean when we talk about insulin resistance.
Stop Treating Insulin Like a Villain
One of the biggest mistakes in online nutrition is treating insulin like some sort of metabolic criminal.
Insulin does influence fuel storage.
Of course it does.
That’s part of its job.
But a normal rise in insulin after a meal does not automatically mean fat loss has stopped forever.
Your body moves between storing energy and using energy throughout the day.
If simply eating carbohydrates made fat loss impossible, nobody eating carbohydrates could ever get lean.
Yet we see men inside the Over 40 Alpha Brotherhood eating carbohydrates every day while losing fat, building muscle and transforming their health.
The question isn’t simply:
“Did insulin rise?”
The bigger questions are:
- How much are you eating?
- What foods are you eating?
- How active are you?
- How much muscle do you carry?
- Are you training?
- How much are you sitting?
- How are you sleeping?
- How much abdominal fat are you carrying?
- What does your overall health look like?
That is the metabolic picture.
Why Muscle Changes the Game
Skeletal muscle is one of the major places your body can use glucose.
After a meal, insulin helps muscle cells take up glucose.
But exercise adds another powerful piece.
Muscle contractions themselves increase glucose uptake.
That means resistance training and everyday movement give your body more reason to use the glucose that is available.
Think about muscle like a warehouse.
The more useful warehouse space you have, the greater your capacity to store and use fuel.
And movement gives your body a reason to take that fuel off the shelves.
This is why I want men over 40 building Metabolic Muscle.
Not vanity muscle.
Not bodybuilder muscle.
Useful muscle. Strong muscle. Healthy muscle.
The Belly Fat Connection
Not all belly fat is the same.
Subcutaneous fat is the fat you can pinch underneath the skin.
Visceral fat sits deeper inside the abdominal cavity around the organs.
And excess abdominal fat is strongly connected with poorer metabolic health.
This is one reason I constantly tell men over 40 that your waistline matters.
Not because six-pack abs are the only definition of health.
But because abdominal fat can be an important warning sign that your metabolic health needs attention.
And for most men, belly fat is also one of the last places the body wants to let go of fat.
That means you have to play the long game.
The 7-Habit Insulin Sensitivity System
Here are the seven habits I broke down in Episode 205.
1. Build and Protect Muscle
This is number one.
Men over 40 should be resistance training.
My preference is total-body training three times per week.
Monday.
Wednesday.
Friday.
You don’t need two-hour workouts.
Inside my programs, we use Metabolic Resistance Training.
We train the entire body, create muscular stress and use progressive overload over time.
Progressive overload doesn’t only mean adding heavier weight.
It can mean:
- More repetitions
- Better control
- Greater range of motion
- Improved technique
- Isometrics
- Unilateral exercises
- Drop sets
- Different training methods
The goal is progression.
2. Walk After Meals
This may be one of the easiest habits you can start immediately.
After dinner:
Walk for 10 minutes.
If that works well, start walking after lunch too.
You don’t need some complicated biohacking protocol.
Just move.
Walk outside.
Walk indoors.
Use a walking pad.
Take the stairs.
Movement after eating gives your muscles another reason to use glucose.
3. Stop Sitting All Day
This one hits home for me because I spend a lot of time working at a computer.
You cannot crush a workout in the morning and then assume that gives you permission to sit for the next eight hours.
Get up every 30–60 minutes.
Do some mobility.
Hit some bodyweight squats.
Walk around.
Stretch.
I call these movement snacks.
Your chair should not become your permanent address.
4. Build a Protein-Centered Balance Plate
This is the foundation of my Meta Test Boost Nutrition System.
When you look at your plate, ask:
Where’s my protein?
Where’s my quality carbohydrate?
Where’s my healthy fat?
Where are my vegetables and fruits?
My system is simple:
BUILD — Protein
Protein supports muscle, recovery and satiety.
FUEL — Complex Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates support training, activity and overall nutrition.
BALANCE — Healthy Fats
Healthy fats are part of a balanced diet and support overall hormonal health.
PROTECT — Vegetables & Fruits
This is where you’re getting fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.
An example could be:
Chicken + basmati rice + avocado + steamed vegetables.
Simple.
Whole foods.
Consistent.
5. Upgrade Your Carbohydrates
You do not have to fear every carbohydrate.
There is a major difference between:
A sugary drink
and
A potato served alongside protein and vegetables.
I want men focusing on quality carbohydrate sources like:
- Potatoes
- Sweet potatoes
- Basmati rice
- White rice
- Black rice
- Steel-cut oats
- Beans
- Lentils
- Quality whole grains
Pair those carbohydrates with protein, healthy fats and vegetables and you’ve completely changed the context of that meal.
6. Reduce Excess Waist Fat While Preserving Muscle
This is where metabolic resistance training shines.
We want to lose excess body fat — especially around the waist — while maintaining and building lean tissue.
That’s why I don’t want men crash dieting.
Instead:
Train.
Walk.
Move.
Eat protein.
Remove ultra-processed foods.
Reduce alcohol.
Build better habits.
You want fat loss happening while you maintain your metabolic muscle.
7. Sleep and Manage Stress
Sleep may be one of the most underrated metabolic tools available.
Poor sleep affects much more than how tired you feel.
Your recovery changes.
Your food decisions change.
Your appetite changes.
Your stress changes.
Your training changes.
And your metabolic health changes.
The same goes for chronic stress.
When you’re chronically stressed, your food decisions often suffer, your sleep worsens and your recovery takes a hit.
You cannot separate metabolic health from the rest of your lifestyle.
The 7 Biggest Mistakes
Before you run out and try to completely rebuild your life tomorrow morning, avoid these mistakes.
Mistake #1: Treating insulin as the enemy
The goal isn’t to eliminate insulin.
The goal is to create a healthier metabolic environment.
Mistake #2: Diagnosing yourself based on symptoms
Fatigue and abdominal fat may be warning signs, but they are not a diagnosis.
Medical assessment and blood testing matter.
Mistake #3: Removing every carbohydrate
Stop confusing highly processed carbohydrates with whole-food carbohydrate sources.
Mistake #4: Doing cardio while ignoring muscle
Cardio has value.
But if you’re over 40 and ignoring resistance training, you’re missing a massive piece of the puzzle.
Mistake #5: Training and then sitting all day
One workout does not undo a sedentary lifestyle.
Mistake #6: Chasing supplements before habits
Supplements supplement the foundation.
They don’t create the foundation.
Mistake #7: Trying to change everything at once
Build your habits gradually.
Week one may be getting your workouts done.
Then improve nutrition.
Then start walking more.
Then improve sleep.
We’re playing the long game.
Your Metabolism Responds to What You Repeatedly Do
This is the part I want you to remember.
Your metabolism is not something you fix with one supplement.
Or one diet.
Or one fasting protocol.
Or one workout.
It responds to what you repeatedly do.
When you lift…
When you walk…
When you build muscle…
When you eat protein-centered Balance Plate meals…
When you improve your sleep…
When you manage stress…
When you reduce excess waist fat…
You are creating a different environment inside your body.
And that is the goal.
